Pilgrims Invited to Attend the 26th Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Traditional Powwow

September 8, 2023 - September 10, 2023

St. Peters Church, 1405 Sibley Memorial Hwy 55120, Mendota, MN

As a way to live into our Land Acknowledgement Statement, Pilgrims are encouraged to experience and learn about the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota by attending their annual powwow, Friday September 8, 5:00-9:30 pm; Saturday, September 9, 11:00 am-9:30 pm; and Sunday, September 10, 11:00 am-5:30 pm at St. Peters Church. Minnesota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Communities, MMDTC is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to preserve, protect, and promote the Dakota culture for future generations.” Each year they hold several programs and activities that focus on that mission. The largest event is their annual Traditional Wacipi (Powwow).

Before Saturday’s and Sunday’s Powwow, from 10 to 11 am, Chris Mato Nunpa and Mike Klein will be hosting a special "educational hour" where they will discuss important Native topics and answer your questions.

Cost: $10 button sales – a donated entrance fee, although no one is turned away. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on!

Come for a few hours or volunteer (typically a 4-hour shift) while you’re there – set up, clean up, food service, merchandise and other. Families are welcome! Attend with other Pilgrims!

For more information and about volunteering please contact Joan Haan (attending Friday night) at jmbhaan@outlook.com or Melissa Stirn (attending Saturday) at melissa.r.stirn@gmail.com.
