10:40 am Forum — There Is No Peace: Processing Experiences of Spiritual Abuse
Spiritual abuse involves coercion and exploitation under the guise of religion, often administered on the part of a dominant, charismatic leader. While it can be difficult to identify, spiritual abuse often results in complex psychological trauma. This forum will clarify the characteristics of spiritual abuse, process common spiritual abuse symptoms and experiences, and center on how faith communities can worship and express their beliefs and values while doing no harm. Time will additionally be spent learning the neuroscience of emotional trauma and its unique manifestations within survivors of spiritual abuse, as well as evidence-based ways of healing from spiritual abuse. This forum will be led by Adam Arnold, MA, LMFT, LADC, a member of Pilgrim and a licensed psychotherapist. He works with individuals and families through a trauma lens.
