In this challenging time in our complicated world, hope may be our greatest need, its viability our greatest question. So many forces threaten to shuttle hope to the sidelines. Yet hope is resilient. In this conversation we consider hope's nature; how it is different than optimism, related to faith and the imagination, and often birthed in community. Julie Neraas is a spiritual director, ordained Presbyterian clergywoman, and former professor at Hamline University. She is the author of Apprenticed to Hope: A Sourcebook for Difficult Times (Augsburg, 2009), which includes reflections on a chronic illness, Seeing The Sacred: A Year in Snapshots (Wipfandstock, 2020), and the forthcoming Hope and Poetry: How They Sustain Us.
